    Worn doesn’t necessarily mean worn out
    Clothing that you no longer wear is by no means worn out. More than half of the clothing given away in Western Europe are suitable for a second life.

    Specialised sorting operations like the Joan Smaal Textielrecycling ensure that this clothing is marketed worldwide. Contemporary and high-quality clothing, as well as winter items, are a large sales market in Eastern Europe. More dated clothing goes to markets in Africa and Asia. Articles of clothing that can no longer be worn are either made into rags for industrial use or serve as raw materials, for example insulation materials in the automobile industry. Remaining clothing can also serve as a valuable fuel for the cement industry.

    • Sorting by hand

    Quickly and effectively recognise and sort out fashion trends
    New items of clothing, which are often initially purchased for over one hundred euros, lose most of their value on the second hand market. For this reason, the clothing we sort is not sold individually, but rather by kilogramm. It is very important to sort out the good quality clothing, because these fetch a much higher return on investment than clothing intended for industrial rag use, for example. Clothing is generally sorted by hand. Our sorters are specially trained by us and must quickly and effectively recognise and sort out fashion trends. Therefore, we invest lots of time in training our employees and offer them secure positions.

    Transport robots

    To make sorting easier for our sorters, Joan Smaal Textielrecycling uses special conveyor belts that automatically deliver goods to the sorting racks and to the presses, in which clothing is packaged. The majority of the sorted clothing is pressed into textile bales weighing between 25 and 40 kg. The bale form allows for effective loading into overseas shipping containers, in which sorted clothing is shipped around the world.

    Ten million kilograms of clothing annually
    10 million kg of clothing are sorted every year by Joan Smaal Textielrecycling in Hardinxveld-Giessendam, the Netherlands. Most of the collected clothing comes from Germany and other affluent European countries as well as from the Netherlands.

    Joan Smaal Textiel Recycling BV produces over 250 different sorts when sorting clothing: men’s trousers, women’s trousers, children’s clothing, shoes, men’s shirts, women’s blouses, bed linens, hand towels etc.. Additionally we provide almost every sort in different quality levels. The specific quality of the sorted items is always negotiated with the certain buyer.

    Clothing sorting is a question of efficiency and astute market observation, in order to react to changes in fashion trends and other permanent changing influences worldwide. Therefore, we have formed trust-based relationships with our customers in order to guarantee the various item qualities and to ensure the smooth sale of sorted clothing. Clothing no longer of use in Europe can still find buyers in other parts of the world and the quality is sometimes still better than cheaply and poorly manufactured new items.
